The junction between East and West Berlin
Quartier Schützenstraße is the beating heart of the capital – located in the centre of Berlin’s Zeitungsviertel district, which has emerged as a hotspot of Germany’s media and start-up scene in recent years.
And it’s not for no reason: rich in tradition, this place at the junction between East and West Berlin was considered the world’s largest press centre between 1900 and 1933. Even decades before, newspaper legends like Leopold Ullstein, August Scherl and Rudolf Mosse made headlines here.
The „Berliner Tageblatt“ newspaper was later followed by the „Berliner Zeitung“ and the „Berliner Morgenpost” - the paper with the widest circulation in the German Reich - as well as the „B. Z. am Mittag“. In addition to various publishing houses, numerous printing and typesetting shops as well as paper wholesalers were based here. For thousands of people who worked here, life revolved around this neighbourhood – until the city centre was bombed in 1945 and the Zeitungsviertel district was almost entirely destroyed.

Today, the site between Rudi-Dutschke-Straße, Zimmerstraße and Markgrafenstraße is home to Axel Springer SE with its dominant high-rise building, the Axel-Springer-Passage, which is currently being renovated, as well as another new building designed by Rem Koolhaas that promises an entirely new way of working.
The Bundesverband Digitalpublisher und Zeitungsverleger (BDZV), Boston Consulting Group and Rocket Internet are located right next door – flanked by agencies, film productions and other media companies.
These attractive surroundings are certainly one of the reasons why more and more young FinTech and PropTech companies as well as start-ups from various sectors are settling in the area. Apart from Checkpoint Charlie and the historic Gendarmenmarkt square, the lively shopping street Friedrichstraße is only a short walk away.
Known for its magnificent Friedrichsstadt Palace and the annual Berlinale film festival, Friedrichstraße is a magnet for tourists and shoppers alike. Along with its side streets, it also draws in the more creative crowds.
New food stores, trendy restaurants, shops and cafés run by their owners - a far cry from Starbucks and the like - cater to this area that is characterised by start-ups and “New Work”.
Quartier Schützenstraße also offers very good connections for public and private transport, thanks to the underground car park and numerous public parking facilities.
The U-Bahn stations Kochstraße/Checkpoint Charlie and Stadtmitte are situated in the immediate vicinity or just a short walk away. The stations Potsdamer Platz, Alexanderplatz, Brandenburger Tor and the central station can also be reached within 15 minutes’ travel time.
